From Yakushima, you can sometimes see rockets launching from the nearby Japanese Space Centre. The island is a very special place for nature. Much of the land is part of the Yakushima National Park. It is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its ancient forests.

Nature works in many amazing ways on this island. The weather is very wet and humid. In fact, Yakushima is the wettest place in Japan. It receives about 7,950 mm of rain every year. This heavy rain helps the lush, green forests grow very thick. The island is made of granite bedrock, so there are no active volcanoes. Because it is so wet, there are many hot springs called onsen. People visit these springs to bathe and relax in the warm water.

People have lived on Yakushima for a very long time. It has been settled since at least the Jōmon period. In the 6th century, Chinese documents first wrote about the island. In the year 601, an expedition was sent to find the area. Later, in 702, old Japanese texts said it was part of Tane Province. During the Edo period, the Shimazu clan ruled the island. Today, it is part of the Kagoshima Prefecture. The population has changed over the years. It reached a peak of 24,010 people in 1960. Now, about 11,858 people live there.

There are many unique living things to find here. The island has huge tracts of subtropical evergreen forests. You can find rare trees like the Jōmon Sugi. This cedar tree is estimated to be at least 2,300 years old. Many animals live among the trees, like Yakushima macaques and sika deer. The island is also a very important place for sea turtles. It is the largest nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles in the North Pacific. You might even see dolphins swimming in the ocean offshore.

Yakushima connects to many things you might already know. Many people recognize its forests from movies and games. The lush woods inspired the setting in the film Princess Mononoke. It also inspired the forest in the game Metal Gear Solid 3. People use different ways to travel to the island. You can take a hydrofoil ferry or a car ferry. You can also fly into Yakushima Airport. This makes it a famous place for both nature lovers and travelers.
