There are 140 islands in the whole group. Five of these islands are the main ones. They are Fukue, Hisaka, Naru, Nakadōri, and Ukujima. The group runs from the Osezaki Lighthouse to the Tsuwazaki Lighthouse. The Tsushima Current flows around the islands. To the north lies Tsushima Island. To the east is the larger island of Kyūshū.

Life on the islands is very active. The land is highly cultivated for farming. You might see deer or other game moving through the area. In the mountain streams, trout are very plentiful. The sea also provides much food for the people. They harvest marine products like oysters and sea urchins. On Fukue Island, people make a famous camellia oil for cosmetics. They also make a sweet treat called Kankoro Mochi. This snack uses sliced, sun-dried sweet potato and mochi.

The islands have a very deep history. In the late 16th century, Portuguese missionaries brought Christianity to Japan. Some people on the islands became Catholic. These people were often treated harshly for their faith. They were persecuted by the Japanese shogunates for a long time. Eventually, the faith became legal again in the 19th century. Today, the islands have many Catholic churches. The most famous one is the Dōzaki church. It was built in 1868 near Fukue port.

There are many interesting places to see. Fukue is a typical castle city. It is home to Ishida Castle. This was the very last castle built in Japanese history. Shortly after it was finished, the Meiji Restoration began. Now, the castle is used as the Gotō high school. Students study there, and the public can walk inside the stone walls. You can reach the islands by flying into the Gotō-Fukue Airport. You can also take a ferry from Nagasaki or Sasebo.

The islands are also part of stories and films. A documentary film called Tora-san in Gotō was shot over 22 years. It began in 1993 and was released in 2016. The film follows a large family of udon noodle makers. You might also recognize the islands from books or shows. The manga and anime series Barakamon is set on Fukue Island. Another series, Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater, is also set here. These stories help show the beauty of the islands to the world.
