Sasebo has a very important history with the navy. Long ago, it was a small fishing village. Later, an admiral named Tōgō Heihachirō chose this spot for a navy base. He liked the deep-water harbor. He also liked that it was near China and Korea. He knew there were coal fields nearby. The Sasebo Naval District was founded in 1886. It was a major port during two big wars. After World War II, the United States Navy took over some of the facilities. Today, the Japan Self-Defense Forces also use parts of the base.

The city has grown much over the years. It was officially a village in 1889. It became a city in 1902. Sasebo has added many neighboring villages and towns to its borders since then. In 2020, the population was 243,223 people. Many people work in industries like shipbuilding. Large shipyards are located near the naval base. The Port of Sasebo has a busy fishing fleet.
