It is part of the Kyushu region in Japan. The island is located south of the main part of Japan. It sits to the northeast of Taiwan. Okinawa is the largest island in its group. However, it is the smallest and least crowded of the five main islands in Japan. The weather there is warm and wet all year. This is called a humid subtropical climate.

Long ago, the way people lived changed many times. In the early days, people were hunter-gatherers. They lived near the seashore and caught fish. They even used shells to make rings for their arms. Later, people began to grow rice. Around the 12th century, they moved to higher ground for farming. This was the Gusuku period. During this time, people built special stone castles called gusuku.

These castles might have been homes or holy places. Some of these old sites are now protected by UNESCO.

Okinawa also had a time as a powerful kingdom. In 1429, King Shō Hashi joined three different kingdoms together. He started the Ryūkyū Kingdom. Its capital was at the beautiful Shuri Castle. The kingdom became a very important place for trade. They traded porcelain with many other countries in Asia. Ryukyuan kings worked with many neighbors, including China and Korea.

Even though they were strong, the Japanese Satsuma Domain invaded in 1609. This changed how the kingdom was ruled for a long time.

In 1945, the island saw a very difficult and violent battle. This was part of the Pacific War. The fight lasted for 82 days. It was a very sad time for the people living there. Many soldiers and many civilians lost their lives.

After the war, the United States controlled the island for many years. The United States handed control back to Japan in 1972. Today, the U.S. military still has many bases on the island.
