Okinawa Island is the largest landmass in the Ryukyu (Nansei) Islands.

It is located in Japan's Kyushu region. The island sits south of the main Japanese islands. It is also northeast of Taiwan. While it is the largest in its group, it is the smallest of Japan's five main islands. It is also the least populated of those five. The island has a humid subtropical climate. This means the weather is warm and wet.

Ancient history on the island began with the Shell Mound periods. These are divided into Early, Middle, and Late stages. During the Early period, people were hunter-gatherers. They used Jōmon pottery, which has wave-like designs. Later, archaeological sites moved closer to the shore. This suggests people began fishing more often. Rice was not grown until the Middle Shell Mound period. People even imported shell rings from the Sakishima Islands. These rings came from Miyakojima and Yaeyama. Some shell axes from 2,500 years ago show influence from the southeastern Pacific.

Around the 12th century, the lifestyle changed again. This was the Gusuku period. People moved from the coast to higher ground. They began practicing agriculture. They built distinctive stone structures called gusuku. These were either holy places, dwellings, or castles for rulers. Many of these sites are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. During this time, Okinawa became a major trade hub. It acted as a relay point for porcelain trade in eastern Asia. Important rulers like Shunten and Eiso led during this era.

In 1314, the Sanzan period began. Three kingdoms—Hokuzan, Nanzan, and Chūzan—competed for power. They all wanted to be recognized by Ming China. King Satto of Chūzan was very successful. He built ties with Korea, China, and Southeast Asia. In 1392, the Chinese Emperor sent many migrants to Okinawa. These families came from Fujian Province. They helped improve technology and diplomacy. Eventually, King Shō Hashi unified the three kingdoms in 1429. He founded the Ryūkyū Kingdom with its capital at Shuri Castle.

The kingdom's independence faced challenges in 1609. The Japanese Satsuma Domain invaded and captured the king. Ryukyu became a vassal of Satsuma. This created a unique situation for trade. The kingdom was a tributary to both China and Japan. This allowed Japan to trade with China through a loophole. Later, in 1879, Japan officially annexed the entire archipelago. The monarchy was abolished. The last king, Shō Tai, was moved to Tokyo. This ended the era of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

Okinawa saw intense conflict during the Pacific War in 1945. The ground battle lasted 82 days from April to June. It was the bloodiest battle of the war. About 95,000 Japanese troops and 20,195 Americans were killed. Many civilians also died. About 149,193 Okinawans were killed or committed suicide.

This high death toll made American leaders worry about invading mainland Japan. After the war, the United States controlled the island. They held control until 1972. Today, the U.S. military maintains 32 bases on the island. These bases cover about 25% of the land.

The heavy military presence has caused many issues. There have been environmental problems like oil spills. Toxic chemicals like PFAS have polluted waterways. In the 1970s, the island was part of a global drug smuggling route. This was known as "The Okinawa System." Criminal rings moved heroin and LSD through the island. There were also serious social tensions. In 1995, a crime involving U.S. Marines caused massive protests. Many locals feel the military presence is a point of contention.

Many people live in the greater Naha area. The city is home to about 320,000 residents. You can see modern transport like the Okinawa Monorail.

While many speak Japanese, some still use the Okinawan language, Uchināguchi. History continues to shape the landscape. In 2019, a fire destroyed parts of Shuri Castle.
