The Ryukyuans are a group of people from the Ryukyu Islands.

These islands form a long chain from Kyushu to Taiwan. Most Ryukyuans live in the Okinawa or Kagoshima prefectures today. They speak Ryukyuan languages, which belong to the Japonic language family. This family also includes the Japanese language and its many dialects. Many Ryukyuans call themselves Uchinaanchu to show their unique identity. This group is the largest ethnic minority in Japan.

Ryukyuan culture has many special and distinct parts. Their traditional religion is indigenous to the islands. They also have a unique way of cooking food. For a long time, rice was not a main part of their diet. It was only introduced to the islands around the 12th century. Some parts of their culture even show matriarchal elements. This means women held important roles in the community. Their history is tied deeply to the sea and trade.

Long ago, the people lived on these islands in isolation. In the 14th century, three different groups merged together. This created the Ryukyu Kingdom, which lasted from 1429 to 1872.

The kingdom was very good at maritime trade. They began trading with Ming China in 1372. In 1609, the Satsuma Domain from Kyushu invaded the kingdom. The kingdom stayed somewhat independent by serving both China and Japan. This was because Japan could not trade directly with China.

Things changed greatly during the Meiji era of Japan. The Empire of Japan took control of the islands. First, the kingdom became the Ryukyu Domain in 1872. In 1879, the domain was abolished and became Okinawa Prefecture.

The last king, Shō Tai, was sent away to Tokyo. The government tried to make Ryukyuans act more like the Yamato people. They worked to change the local language and traditions. Later, the United States occupied the islands from 1945 to 1972.

Scientists study the Ryukyuans to learn about the past. Genetic studies show they are a distinct group of people. They share a lot of ancestry with the Jōmon people. These were prehistoric hunter-gatherers who lived long ago.

Some studies show they have about 28% Jōmon ancestry. Others suggest this number might be as high as 36%. These traits help researchers track how people moved across Asia. Even today, Ryukyuans continue to protect their special heritage.
