He began his rule on June 8, 1848. He was only six years old at the time. He ruled for nearly 31 years. His reign was a time of great change for his people. Many travelers from far away arrived at his islands. People from Europe and the United States wanted to trade. These visitors changed how the kingdom interacted with the world.

During the 1850s, the kingdom opened up to more trade. Commodore Matthew C. Perry visited the port of Naha several times. He wanted to meet the young king, but he could not. Instead, he met with high officials of the royal government. This led to the Lew Chew Compact of 1854. This agreement helped open Ryukyu to trade with the United States. Other nations, like France, also began to build strong ties. In 1857, a French mission even gave field artillery to Shō Tai.

Later, the relationship between Ryukyu and Japan changed deeply. In 1868, the Meiji Restoration happened in Japan. This created a new central government in Tokyo. The leaders in Tokyo wanted to bring Ryukyu under their control. In 1872, the government named Shō Tai a Domain King. This meant the kingdom was now part of Japan. However, the kingdom still had its own ways of doing things. This caused many disagreements between the leaders in Tokyo and the king.

In 1879, the Japanese government made a final decision. They ended the Ryukyu Kingdom and created Okinawa Prefecture.

Shō Tai was ordered to give up his throne. He had to leave his palace on March 30, 1879. He moved to Tokyo with 96 members of his court. He arrived in Yokohama on June 8, 1879. In May 1885, the government gave him a new title. He became a Kōshaku, which is a high rank of nobility. This rank gave him a seat in the House of Peers.

Shō Tai lived the rest of his life in Tokyo. He was involved in business and moved in elite circles. He even helped start a company called Maruichi Shōten. This company sold Okinawan products in the city of Osaka. He only returned to Okinawa once in 1884. He went to the royal mausoleum at Shuri to honor his ancestors. Shō Tai died in 1901 at the age of 58. His family kept his traditions for two years after he passed.
