He became king in 1848 when he was only six years old. He ruled for nearly 31 years. During his reign, many travelers came to his islands. People from Europe and the United States wanted to trade. In 1854, a deal was made to open Ryukyu to trade with America. This was a big change for the islands.

Later, things changed for the kingdom. The Japanese government wanted to take control. In 1879, the government ended the kingdom. They made the islands part of Okinawa Prefecture.

Shō Tai had to leave his palace. He moved to the big city of Tokyo. The Japanese government gave him a new title. They called him a Kōshaku, which is a high rank of nobility. He lived in Tokyo and was involved in business. He died in 1901. His family kept many of his old traditions for a long time.
