These groups were called Hokuzan, Nanzan, and Chūzan. Chūzan was the strongest group. In 1429, a leader named Shō Hashi united the island. He started the Ryukyu Kingdom.

The kingdom was small but very busy. It was a center for sea trade.

Ryukyuan ships sailed to many lands. They traded with China, Japan, and Southeast Asia. They traded silver and fans for sugar and ivory. This was a golden age for the kingdom.

Things changed in 1609. A group from Japan called the Satsuma Domain invaded. The kingdom stayed mostly free to trade with China. This helped Japan trade with China too. But the kingdom was under Japanese control for a long time. In 1872, the kingdom became part of Japan. It is now called Okinawa Prefecture.
