This kingdom was small in size. However, it was very important for trade in East Asia. It acted as a bridge between many different lands. The kingdom was ruled by a monarchy. It also had special ties to the Ming dynasty in China. This connection helped the kingdom grow and thrive for many years.

Before the kingdom began, Okinawa Island was divided.

Three main groups ruled the island. These were Hokuzan, Nanzan, and Chūzan. Hokuzan was the largest in land and military power. Nanzan was in the south. Chūzan was in the center and was the strongest economically. Eventually, Chūzan won the battles between these groups. A leader named Shō Hashi united the whole island in 1429. He founded the first Shō dynasty and built Shuri Castle.

Ryukyuan ships sailed to many places like Vietnam, Japan, and Siam. They carried many different goods on these long trips. They traded Japanese silver and fans for things like sugar and ivory. They also traded Chinese ceramics and silk. China helped the kingdom by providing ships for these trips. This era of successful trading was known as a golden age. It lasted for about 150 years.

In 1609, the kingdom faced a major change.

The Satsuma Domain from Japan invaded the islands. This invasion happened after the Ryukyu Kingdom refused to help a leader named Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Even after the invasion, the kingdom kept a special status. It lived under a system of dual subordination. This meant it answered to both Japan and China. The kingdom kept much of its own ways to keep trade with China moving. This helped the leaders in Japan trade with China too.

Eventually, the era of the kingdom came to an end. In 1872, the Empire of Japan reorganized it into the Ryukyu Domain. By 1879, the Meiji government abolished the domain entirely.
