Shō Hashi was a very important king from the island of Okinawa. He lived from 1372 until 1439. Many people call him the man who started the Ryukyu Kingdom. He was born into a family of sea travelers. Some scholars think his family came from the island of Kyushu. Hashi was a strong leader and a great soldier.

He first became the lord of Sashiki Castle in 1392. He even trained a group of soldiers on horses there.

Hashi helped change how Okinawa was ruled. At first, the island had different leaders in different places. One leader in Chūzan was named Bunei. Later histories say Bunei was not a good ruler. In 1407, Hashi helped his father, Shishō, take the throne. This started a new group of rulers called the First Shō dynasty.

After his father died, Hashi became the king of Chūzan himself. He worked to bring the different parts of the island together.

Being a king meant managing many important relationships. Hashi kept a strong bond with the Ming dynasty in China. He worked with Chinese officials who helped him rule. One official named Kaiki was a very important advisor. Kaiki helped with trade and even gave advice on long life. These connections helped the kingdom grow through trade.

Hashi sent ships to many far places like Siam and Java. He even helped set up a trading spot in China.

Hashi left behind many important things for people to find. In 1427, he put up a stone monument at Shuri Castle. This stone is called a stele. It has writing on it in an old style of Chinese.

This is the oldest stone with writing found in Okinawa. It tells people about the trees and flowers planted at the castle. It also shows how the kingdom traded with China. These facts help us learn about his time as king.

When Hashi died in 1439, things changed for his family. He was buried in a special cave tomb near Shuri.

After he died, his sons and grandsons took turns being king. Some of these kings ruled for a very short time. This led to many arguments about who should lead next. Even though things were hard later, his work helped shape the history of Okinawa.
