Sheshi was a ruler in ancient Egypt during a confusing time. This period is known as the Second Intermediate Period. It lasted from about 1800 BC to 1550 BC. Historians find this era very hard to study. They struggle to know exactly when certain events happened. They also find it difficult to name every leader.

Even with these mysteries, Sheshi is a very important figure. He is the best-known king from this specific time. We know more about him than almost any other ruler from his era.

We know about Sheshi mostly through small objects called scarabs. These are stone seals shaped like beetles.

Archaeologists have found 396 seals with his name on them. This is a huge number for that time. It is three times more than the next most famous king. These seals show his personal name, Sheshi. They also show his royal title, Maaibre. This title means "The righteous one is the heart of Ra."

These little seals tell us about his connections to the world.

Most seals were found in places where we do not know the exact spot. However, 20 percent were found in many different lands. They were found in Egypt, Nubia, and Canaan. Some were even found in Carthage. This shows that Sheshi had many trade links. He likely had many diplomatic contacts with other people. These seals traveled very long distances during his reign.

Experts have three main ideas about which group Sheshi belonged to. Some think he was a Hyksos king named Salitis. The Hyksos were a group that moved into Egypt. Others believe he was a vassal. A vassal is a ruler who serves a stronger king.

A third idea is that he ruled the 14th Dynasty. This was a group of kings from Canaan. They may have ruled the Nile Delta before the Hyksos arrived. Each idea is still being debated by scholars today.

Learning about Sheshi helps us understand how ancient people lived. His seals show us how goods moved between different lands. We can see how trade linked Egypt to places like Nubia and Canaan. Even without big monuments, his name survived through these small objects. It is amazing how tiny things can tell such big stories. These seals are now kept in famous museums around the world. You can find them in the British Museum and the Louvre.
