The Hyksos were a group of rulers who led Egypt during a special time called the Second Intermediate Period.

Their name comes from an Egyptian phrase that means "rulers of foreign lands." They held power during the Fifteenth Dynasty from about 1650 to 1550 BC. Their main city was Avaris, which sat in the Nile Delta. From this seat of power, they ruled over Lower and Middle Egypt. This was a very important moment because it was the first time foreign kings ruled the land of Egypt.

Many people wonder how these foreign rulers arrived in Egypt. Some old stories say they invaded the land with great force. However, modern experts often disagree with those old accounts.

Instead, it seems that people from the Levant settled in the Nile Delta over a long time. They likely came to find work and a new life. Archaeology shows that Canaanite groups lived in the area for 150 years before the Hyksos became kings. It was more of a slow move than a sudden fight.

The Hyksos brought many new things to the Egyptian world. They are often credited with introducing the horse and the chariot to the region. They also brought new tools and weapons like the composite bow. Another famous item was the khopesh, which is a sickle-shaped sword.

While people debate exactly how these things arrived, they certainly changed how life worked. The Hyksos also kept many of their own customs from the Levant. They blended these traditions with the Egyptian ways they found.

It is important to know that the Hyksos did not rule the whole country. While they were in the north, other Egyptian leaders ruled from the city of Thebes. These leaders belonged to the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Dynasties.

For a while, these different groups lived alongside each other. Eventually, wars broke out between the Hyksos and the pharaohs in Thebes. This conflict changed the course of Egyptian history forever.

In the end, the Hyksos rule came to an end during a period of great change. An Egyptian leader named Ahmose I defeated the Hyksos in battle.

After his victory, he started the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt. This new era began a long and famous time for the Egyptian empire. Even though the Hyksos were eventually defeated, their time in Egypt left a lasting mark on the world. We still learn about them through the ruins of cities like Avaris.
