Ramesses II was a very powerful leader in ancient Egypt.

He belonged to the Nineteenth Dynasty. Most people call him Ramesses the Great. He was a famous pharaoh of the New Kingdom. This was a time when Egypt was very strong. Ramesses was also known as a great warrior. He led many different military campaigns to protect his land. He ruled for 66 years. This was one of the longest reigns in history.

Ramesses spent much of his time building things. He wanted to show his power through large monuments. He built a new capital city called Pi-Ramesses in the Nile Delta. This city helped him plan his trips to Syria. He also built many large temples and statues. His workers made many weapons and chariots for his army. They could make 1,000 weapons in just one week. They also made 250 chariots in two weeks.

He was a very active leader in war. In his second year, he fought sea pirates called the Sherden. He used ships and troops to catch them. This helped keep the Egyptian coast safe. He also fought many battles in the Levant. One famous fight was the Battle of Kadesh. He fought against the Hittite Empire in this battle. The battle was a stalemate, which means neither side won.

Ramesses had a long and busy history. He became king around May 31, 1279 BC. He was 25 years old when he started ruling. He led at least 15 military campaigns during his life. Some of these trips took him to Nubia and Canaan. He even led his son, Amun-her-khepeshef, on a campaign. Later, he made a peace treaty with the Hittites. This helped bring a new kind of calm to the region.
