Pepi II Neferkare was a famous king from Egypt's Old Kingdom.

He was part of the Sixth Dynasty, a time of great history. His second name, Neferkare, means "Beautiful is the Ka of Re." He became the king when he was only six years old. This happened after the death of the previous ruler, Nemtyemsaf I.

His mother, Queen Ankhesenpepi II, likely helped him rule during his early years. She may have worked with her brother, Djau, to guide the young king.

During his reign, the way Egypt was ruled began to change.

Local leaders called nomarchs grew much more powerful over time. These nobles gained wealth and started to act more independently. They often built very large and expensive tombs for themselves. To manage this shift, Pepi II split the role of vizier. A vizier is a high official who helps the king. He created one vizier for Upper Egypt and another for Lower Egypt. This change moved even more power away from the capital at Memphis.

Historians have many different ideas about how long Pepi II ruled.

An ancient writer named Manetho said the king ruled for 94 years. Another old document called the Turin King List says he ruled for 90 years. However, some modern experts think these numbers might be too high. They look at dated records from his time in power. The latest known record is from his 62nd or 63rd year. Because of this, some scholars believe he may have ruled for about 64 years.

Life in the royal court included many interesting people and activities.

Pepi II had several wives, such as Neith and Iput II. Some of these queens even had their own small pyramids. A young Pepi II once wrote a letter to a leader named Harkhuf. Harkhuf led trips to Nubia to find items like ivory and ebony. In one letter, the young king asked for a person called a pygmy to be brought back alive. This letter is sometimes called the first travelogue because it tells a story of travel.

This era of history is very important for understanding ancient Egypt.

The rise of the nomarchs eventually led to the end of the Old Kingdom. Within a few years after Pepi II died, the central power faded. This started a new time called the First Intermediate Period. This period lasted from the Seventh Dynasty through the Tenth Dynasty. By looking at Pepi II, we can see how even strong kingdoms can change. His long life connects the height of the Old Kingdom to its later changes.
