Piye's rise to power happened because of trouble in Egypt. Many different rulers in Egypt were fighting each other. A leader named Tefnakht formed a group of kings in the Delta region. This group tried to stop Piye's influence. They even convinced one of Piye's allies to switch sides. The king of Herakleopolis asked Piye for help during a siege. Piye reacted very quickly to this hard job. In his 20th year of ruling, he gathered a large army. He marched north to protect his interests and his allies.

Piye saw his military campaign as a holy war. He told his soldiers to clean themselves before they fought. He offered many sacrifices to the god Amun. Piye won a big victory at the city of Herakleopolis. He also captured the city of Hermopolis after a five-month fight. Many other kings had to give in to him. These included Iuput II and Osorkon IV. Tefnakht hid on an island in the Delta. Tefnakht sent a letter saying he was defeated.

When Piye died, he was buried in a special way. His tomb was at el-Kurru near Jebel Barkal. It was located next to a huge pyramid called Ku.1. The burial chamber was cut deep into the bedrock. He was laid on a bed on a stone bench. This was the first time a pharaoh had this kind of burial in 500 years. Even his four favorite horses were buried with him.
