He belonged to the Fourth Dynasty during the Old Kingdom period. This was a time long ago, between 2700 and 2200 BC. Khafre was the son of King Khufu. He became king after his brother, Djedefre, passed away. Most experts believe he ruled for about 24 to 26 years.

Some older Greek historians wrote different things. They claimed he ruled for 56 or even 66 years. They even described him as a tyrant. However, modern scholars use different clues to find the truth.

Khafre is most famous for his massive pyramid at Giza.

The Egyptians called it Wer-Khafre. This name means "Khafre is Great." It is the second largest pyramid at the Giza site. His father's pyramid is actually even larger. Khafre's pyramid complex also included a mortuary temple. This temple was located very close to the pyramid itself. A long path called a causeway connected different parts of his complex. This helped people move between the temples and the pyramid.

Some people believe Khafre also built the Great Sphinx.

The Sphinx is a huge statue with a lion's body. It sits very close to Khafre's pyramid temple. Some experts say the face looks like his statues. They think the Sphinx was a guardian for the pyramid. It also acted as a symbol of royal power. The Sphinx became a very important figure later in Egyptian history. This connection to the pyramid helps us understand its purpose.

We know a lot about Khafre through many statues.

Archaeologist Auguste Mariette found many of them in 1860. He found statues in a well at the valley temple. There were 23 special spots carved into the ground. These spots held life-size statues of the king. Some people think these statues represented the hours of the day. Many of these beautiful statues are now in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. They show us what the king might have looked like.

Khafre had a very large family with many children. He had at least 12 sons and 3 or 4 daughters.

One of his sons was named Nekure. We know about Nekure from a special document called a will. This document helps historians guess how long Khafre ruled. Khafre also had several wives. One wife was named Meresankh III. She was actually his niece. His family life was very important to his role as a king.
