Khafre was a powerful monarch of ancient Egypt.

He ruled during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom. This era occurred between 2700 and 2200 BC. Khafre was the son of King Khufu. He became king after his brother, Djedefre, died. His reign is a subject of much study by historians. Most scholars believe he ruled for 24 to 26 years. They base this on the Will of Prince Nekure.

This document was found in a mastaba tomb. It was written by Khafre's son, Nekure. Other ancient sources give very different numbers. The historian Manetho claimed Khafre ruled for 66 years. Greek historians Diodorus and Herodotus suggested even longer reigns. They described him as a tyrant who followed his father. Modern archaeology provides a more measured view of his time.

Khafre is best known for his massive pyramid at Giza.

The Egyptians called this structure Wer-Khafre. This name translates to "Khafre is Great." It is the second-largest pyramid at the Giza site. Only his father's Great Pyramid is larger. The pyramid complex was highly organized. A long path called a causeway connected the different buildings. This path linked the Valley Temple to the Pyramid Temple. The Valley Temple sat closer to the Nile River. It was located right next to the Sphinx temple. These structures worked together as a single religious site.

Some egyptologists believe Khafre built the Great Sphinx.

This massive statue has the body of a lion. It sits very near to his pyramid temple. The proximity suggests they were part of one plan. Some researchers note a resemblance in facial structures. They compare the Sphinx to known statues of Khafre. They believe the Sphinx served as a guardian for the pyramid. It also functioned as a symbol of royal power. Much later, during the New Kingdom, the Sphinx became deified. This means people began to worship it as a god.

Khafre's mortuary temple was located near his pyramid.

This temple was a central part of his complex. Fragments of maceheads have been found here. These items were inscribed with his name. Archaeologists also found various stone vessels at the site. The Valley Temple also held important inscriptions. These texts mentioned the goddess Hathor and the place Bubastis. Blocks found there also showed his Horus name, Weser-ib. These findings help us understand the religious life of his court.

We know much about Khafre because of his many statues.

He has more recorded statues than any other Old Kingdom ruler. Most of these were found around the Giza necropolis. In the Valley Temple, there were 23 depressions in the floor. These holes originally held life-size statues of the king. One depression was wider than the rest. Some experts think these 24 spots represented the hours of a day. Auguste Mariette discovered many of these statues in 1860. He found nine of them in a well. Some were headless, but others were complete. They are now kept in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Khafre had a very large and complex family.

He had at least 12 sons and three or four daughters. His wives also played important roles in his life. Some believe he was the son of Queen Meritites I. An inscription shows him honoring her memory. Others suggest his mother may have been Queen Henutsen. He had children with several different women. One wife was Queen Meresankh III. She was actually his niece. Other possible children include Menkaure and Khamerernebty II. These family connections were vital to the royal line.

Khafre's life connects us to the broader history of Egypt. His building projects show the incredible organization of the Fourth Dynasty. The scale of the pyramids demonstrates how much power the pharaohs held. The study of his statues helps us understand ancient art. Even the different accounts from Greek historians are important. They show how later cultures viewed the ancient Egyptians. By studying his reign, we learn about the structures of early society. We see how religion, family, and architecture all worked together. This helps us piece together the story of the Old Kingdom.
