He was often called a sky father by those who followed him. Even gods who were not his own children would call him Father. All the other gods would rise when he was present. His most famous symbols were the eagle and the thunderbolt.

He was also known as a cloud-gatherer. Some people even thought he was the cause of life for all things.

The story of Zeus begins with a very difficult family history. His father was named Cronus, who was the ruler of the cosmos. Cronus had a fear that one of his children would overthrow him. Because of this, he swallowed his children as soon as they were born.

To save her sixth child, Rhea used a clever plan. She gave Cronus a stone wrapped in cloths to swallow instead.

Zeus grew up in secret in a cave on the island of Crete.

Different stories tell us exactly where this happened. Some say he was born in Lyctus or on Mount Ida. Others mention a place called Dicte or even Arcadia. While he was a baby, he was raised by nymphs named Adrasteia and Ida.

A goat named Amalthea also helped by feeding him milk. To keep him safe, the Kouretes would beat their shields to hide his crying.

When Zeus reached manhood, he took steps to change the world. He used his strength to make Cronus release his siblings. This included his brothers Hades and Poseidon, and his sisters Hestia, Demeter, and Hera.

Zeus then led a great war against the Titans. This war was called the Titanomachy. To help him win, Zeus freed the Cyclopes from their prison.

In thanks, the Cyclopes gave him his mighty thunderbolt to use in battle.

The name Zeus has a very long history that goes back many centuries. It comes from an even older name, *Dyēus, which meant the daytime sky.

You can see how this name is related to the Roman god Jupiter. The name is also linked to words in Sanskrit and Albanian. This shows that many different cultures shared similar ideas about a sky father. Zeus remains one of the most famous figures in all of ancient mythology.
