Moons of Saturn

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Saturn has more moons than any other planet in our Solar System. Scientists have confirmed 285 moons orbiting this giant gas planet.

These moons are very different from each other. Some are tiny moonlets found inside the rings. Others are huge worlds like Titan. Titan is the second largest moon in the Solar System. It is even larger than the planet Mercury. Titan has a thick atmosphere filled with nitrogen. It also has landscapes with river networks and lakes made of hydrocarbons.

Moons can work in different ways around Saturn. Most of the twenty-four regular moons orbit in the same direction that Saturn spins. This is called a prograde orbit. Some moons move in the opposite direction. These are called retrograde moons. Many of the 261 irregular moons move this way. These irregular moons often have tilted or oval paths. Some moons even share an orbit. Janus and Epimetheus are co-orbitals because they share the same path.

Some moons act like shepherds. They help keep the edges of the rings in place.

People have been finding Saturn's moons for a long time. Christiaan Huygens discovered Titan in 1655 using a telescope he designed. Giovanni Domenico Cassini found several moons between 1671 and 1684. These included Tethys, Dione, Rhea, and Iapetus. William Herschel found Mimas and Enceladus in 1789. Later, space probes like Voyager and Cassini helped find even more. The Cassini mission arrived at Saturn in July 2004. It found many small moons like Methone and Pallene.

Finding small moons is a hard job for astronomers. Many new moons are very dim and far away. Scientists use a special trick called shift-and-add to see them. They take many long pictures of the same spot. Then they stack the images together to make the moon visible.

Using this method, researchers found many moons in recent years. In 2019, they found about 80 new irregular moons. By March 2026, the total count reached 285 moons. Most of these new moons are very small and faint.

Saturn's moons are named using special traditions. In 1847, John Herschel suggested using names from mythology. He chose names of Titans and Titanesses. These were figures associated with the god Saturn. This makes the moons feel like a big family. Some moons have very strange looks. Iapetus has one black side and one white side. Enceladus shoots jets of ice from its south pole.
