Moons of Neptune

Neptune has 16 known moons circling its blue surface.

Most of these moons are named after water deities from Greek mythology. This is because Neptune is the god of the sea. The moons can be split into two main groups. The first group is called regular moons. These seven moons stay close to the planet. They move in circular paths that follow Neptune's equator.

The second group is made of irregular moons. These nine moons stay much farther away from the planet. They often have tilted or stretched paths.

One moon, Triton, is very special and unique.

Triton is the largest moon of Neptune. It has a retrograde orbit, which means it moves the opposite way Neptune spins. Scientists believe Neptune captured Triton using its gravity. This capture was likely a very violent event. It probably crashed into Neptune's original moons. This crash broke those moons into a disc of rubble. The seven regular moons were later made from this rubble.

Triton is even large enough to have its own thin atmosphere. This atmosphere can form clouds and hazes.

People have been finding these moons for a long time.

William Lassell discovered Triton in 1846. This was only 17 days after Neptune itself was found. Later, Gerard P. Kuiper found the moon Nereid in 1949. In 1981, a team found the moon Larissa. They were actually looking for rings around the planet. They saw a star's light dip for a few seconds. This dip showed them a moon was passing by. The Voyager 2 spacecraft flew by in 1989. It found five more inner moons like Proteus and Naiad.

There are many interesting facts about these small worlds.

The inner moons are very dark objects. They are made of water ice mixed with dark material. Proteus is the largest regular moon. It is about 400 km wide and has many craters. The moon Nereid is the largest of the irregular moons. It has a very stretched and unusual orbit. One moon, S/2021 N 1, is very far away. It takes about 27 Earth years to orbit Neptune once.

This makes it the farthest known moon in the Solar System.

The way moons move tells a story of the past. For example, the way Galatea orbits helps hold Neptune's rings in place. This moon acts like a shepherd for the ring particles. We can see how gravity shapes everything in the system. Even small moons like Hippocamp tell us about hidden details. Astronomers found it by looking at old Hubble Space Telescope images. By studying these moons, we learn how giant planets grow. The moons of Neptune are like a puzzle of the solar system.
