Most of these moons have names from Greek water gods.

Triton is the largest moon.

It is very special. Triton orbits the wrong way. This is called a retrograde orbit. This means it moves opposite to Neptune's spin. Scientists think Neptune caught Triton in its pull. This capture likely caused a big crash. This crash broke old moons into bits. These bits later made seven small inner moons.

These inner moons stay close to Neptune.

They move in circles. They are also near Neptune's rings. One moon, Proteus, is the largest of these. It is about 400 km wide.

Other moons stay far away. These are called irregular moons. They have odd, tilted paths. One moon, Nereid, has a very stretched path. The farthest moon is S/2021 N 1. It orbits farther than any other moon we know. It takes about 27 Earth years to circle Neptune once.
