It is a very big world. It is even larger than the dwarf planet Pluto.

Triton has a strange way of moving. Most moons orbit in the same direction as their planet. But Triton has a retrograde orbit. This means it moves in the opposite direction.

Scientists think Triton was not born near Neptune. It may have come from the Kuiper belt. This is a cold ring of icy objects far from the Sun. Neptune's gravity likely caught Triton and pulled it into orbit.

The moon is very cold and active. Its surface is mostly made of frozen nitrogen. It also has water ice and frozen carbon dioxide.

Triton has a thin atmosphere. This atmosphere has clouds made of nitrogen ice.

William Lassell found Triton in 1846. He used a large telescope to see it. In 1989, a spacecraft named Voyager 2 flew past Triton. It was the only close visit we have had. The probe saw that Triton has a very busy surface. It has many marks from ice volcanoes and shifting ground.
