Sedna is a dwarf planet in the far reaches of our Solar System.

It orbits the Sun much farther out than Neptune. Sedna is about 900 km wide. It is a very red world. This color comes from tholins. Tholins are reddish organic mixtures on the surface. They form when light and space particles hit simple compounds.

Sedna has a very strange path around the Sun. This path is called an orbit. Its orbit is one of the widest known. It is also very elliptical. This means it is shaped like a long oval rather than a circle.

Because it stays so far away, it is very cold. One trip around the Sun takes 11,400 years.

Scientists found Sedna in 2003. They named it after a goddess from Inuit myth. Sedna is a large object, but it has no known moons. Because it has no moons, we do not know its mass. We also do not know its density. Scientists think its surface has water ice and methane ice too.
