This moon is made of rock and water ice. It has many different layers inside. It has a core made of iron and sulfur. Above that is a layer of rock. On the outside, there is ice and water. Ganymede has a huge ocean under its ice. This ocean might have more water than all of Earth's oceans combined.

Ganymede is special because it has its own magnetic field. This is a force that can pull on metals. It is made by movements deep inside the moon's core. This field affects the aurorae, which are bright lights in the sky.

The surface has two main types of ground. Some parts are dark and covered in craters. Other parts are light and have many grooves. These grooves might have formed from heat inside the moon. Ganymede orbits Jupiter every seven days. It also moves in a special way with two other moons. This set of steps is called a Laplace resonance.
