It is a little smaller than our Moon. It is the closest icy moon to Jupiter.

The surface of Europa is very smooth. It has many light tan cracks and streaks. It does not have big mountains or craters. This makes it the smoothest solid object we know of in our Solar System.

Scientists think a huge ocean is hidden under the ice. This ocean could be two or three times bigger than Earth's oceans. Heat keeps the water liquid. This heat comes from tidal flexing. This is a way the moon stretches and squeezes as it orbits Jupiter. This squeezing creates heat inside the moon.

This heat might help life live in the water. Some tools, like the Hubble Space Telescope, saw water plumes. These are sprays of water vapor that shoot out from the moon. This could help us look for life without landing. The Europa Clipper spacecraft was launched in October 2024 to study it more.
