It is the second-smallest of the four large moons. Io is a very busy world. It has over 400 active volcanoes. This makes it the most active object in our Solar System.

Why is it so active? The moon is pulled by Jupiter and two other moons. This pulling creates tidal heating. This means friction inside the moon makes it hot. The heat causes many volcanoes to erupt. Some volcanoes shoot plumes high into the sky. These plumes contain sulfur and sulfur dioxide.

Io's surface is very colorful. It has shades of yellow, red, white, black, and green. These colors come from sulfur. The moon also has many tall mountains. Some peaks are taller than Mount Everest. Most of Io is made of silicate rock. It has a core of iron. This core is very heavy. Io has very little water compared to other objects.
