The famous astronomer Galileo Galilei discovered it using a telescope. He actually saw Io and Europa as one single point of light at first. He was able to see them as separate bodies the very next day. Another scientist named Simon Marius also claimed to see the moons. He suggested naming them after lovers of the god Zeus. Because Galileo published his findings first, he gets the credit. Io was even used to help find the speed of light.

We have learned much more about Io from visiting spacecraft. The Pioneer probes flew by in 1973 and 1974. Later, the Voyager spacecraft visited in 1979 and saw the colorful landscape. They found mountains that are taller than Mount Everest on Earth. The Galileo spacecraft visited in the 1990s and early 2000s. These missions showed us how Io affects Jupiter's magnetosphere. This is a large area of magnetic force around the planet. Today, the Juno spacecraft and the Hubble Space Telescope still study it.

Another astronomer, Simon Marius, claimed to have seen them a week earlier. However, Galileo is credited with the discovery because he published his findings first. Marius later suggested naming the moons after lovers of Zeus. This naming scheme was eventually adopted.

History shows that Io has helped us understand the universe. It played a role in the adoption of the Copernican model of the Solar System. It also helped validate Kepler's laws of planetary motion. Scientists even used Io to make the first measurement of the speed of light. In the 1970s, the Pioneer spacecraft provided better estimates of Io's mass. In 1979, the Voyager spacecraft revealed Io's true, colorful nature. They discovered that the surface was young and lacked impact craters. This was because the volcanoes constantly replace the old surface with new material.

This activity also affects the radiation levels of Jupiter's extensive magnetosphere. This creates a very hostile radiation environment for anything near the moon. Today, missions like Juno and the Hubble Space Telescope continue to study this remarkable, changing world.
