It is mostly made of water ice. It has only a little bit of rock.

Mimas has a very big crater. We call this crater Herschel. It was named for William Herschel. He was the man who found the moon in 1789.

A huge hit from space made this crater. The hole is very large. It is almost one-third the size of the whole moon.

Scientists think Mimas has a hidden ocean. This ocean is under the ice. It is 20 to 30 km deep. Saturn's pull helps keep the water warm. This is called tidal heating.

Mimas also helps shape the rings of Saturn. It pulls on small bits of dust and ice. This pull clears a big gap. We call this gap the Cassini Division.

Some people say Mimas looks like a space station. A map of its heat looks like Pac-Man. This is a fun way to see the moon.
