Mimas

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Mimas is the seventh-largest natural satellite orbiting the planet Saturn. It holds a unique place in our solar system as the smallest astronomical body known to be roughly rounded. This shape occurs because its own gravity is strong enough to pull its mass into a sphere.

Despite its rounded look, Mimas is not a perfect sphere. It is noticeably oblate, meaning it is shaped like an ellipsoid. This happens because tidal forces from Saturn stretch the moon. Its longest axis is about 10% longer than its shortest axis.

The composition of Mimas is revealed by its low density of 1.15 g/cm3. This measurement indicates that the moon is composed mostly of water ice with only a small amount of rock. This icy makeup suggests that Mimas is a world of frozen materials. Scientists have also discovered that the moon may hide a liquid ocean beneath its surface ice. This internal ocean is thought to be located between 20 and 30 km below the surface. Researchers believe the ocean is quite young, perhaps forming within the last 25 million years. It is likely kept warm by the tidal forces exerted by Saturn.

The surface of Mimas is heavily cratered and shows very little sign of recent geological activity. The most famous feature is the Herschel crater. This crater is one of the largest relative to the size of its parent body in the entire Solar System.

Herschel measures across about one-third of the mean diameter of Mimas. It was created by an extremely energetic impact event. The crater has walls approximately 5 km high and a floor that reaches depths of 4 km. A central peak also rises from the crater floor. If a crater of this relative scale existed on Earth, it would be wider than Australia. The impact was so powerful that shock waves traveled through the entire moon, disrupting the surface on the opposite side.

Mimas was discovered by the astronomer William Herschel on 17 September 1789. He used a 40-foot metal mirror reflecting telescope to make his observation.

The name Mimas comes from Greek mythology, referring to one of the Giants. The naming system for Saturn's moons was actually suggested by William's son, John Herschel. In 1847, John published a list suggesting that the moons be named after Titans and Giants.

This tradition connects the celestial bodies of our solar system to ancient stories of the struggle between the Giants and the Olympians.

Beyond its own surface, Mimas plays a major role in the structure of Saturn's rings. It is responsible for clearing the Cassini Division, which is the large gap between the A Ring and the B Ring.

This happens through a process called orbital resonance. In the Huygens Gap, particles are in a 2:1 resonance with Mimas. This means the particles orbit twice for every one orbit of the moon. The repeated gravitational pulls from Mimas act on these particles in the same direction every time. These constant pulls force the particles into new orbits, keeping the gap clear. Mimas also affects the boundary between the C and B rings through a 3:1 resonance.

Human exploration of Mimas has increased as our technology has improved. The Pioneer 11 spacecraft flew by the moon in 1979. Later, the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 probes provided more images in 1980 and 1981. However, the most detailed information came from the Cassini orbiter. Cassini entered orbit around Saturn in 2004 and performed a very close flyby of Mimas in 2010.

These missions allowed scientists to study the moon's temperature, shape, and movement with great precision. This data helped researchers identify the possible presence of a subsurface ocean.

Pop culture enthusiasts often notice interesting shapes on Mimas. Because of the massive Herschel crater, the moon resembles the Death Star from the film Star Wars. This is a visual coincidence rather than a physical connection.

Additionally, a temperature map created by NASA using Cassini data shows a pattern resembling the video game character Pac-Man.

In this map, the warmest regions along one edge form the shape of the character, with the Herschel crater acting as the mouth. These visual similarities make the study of Mimas an engaging subject for both scientists and the public.
