space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Pluto is a dwarf planet far from the sun. It has a thin layer of gas around it. This is called an atmosphere.

Most of this air is nitrogen. It also has some methane and carbon monoxide. These gases come from ice on the surface. The ice turns into gas through a way called sublimation.

High-energy radiation hits these gases. This causes changes that make new things. These new things form a blue haze. The haze has many layers. Some layers are more than 10 km thick.

The atmosphere is very thin. The pressure is only 1/100,000 of Earth's pressure. It is also very cold. But the temperature rises as you go up. This happens because of a greenhouse effect. Methane helps trap heat to make this happen.

Pluto's air changes with the seasons. As Pluto moves, the ice moves too. This can change the color of the planet. Scientists studied Pluto using telescopes. In 2015, a spacecraft named New Horizons flew by to see it up close.
