Uranus has 29 moons orbiting its huge shape. These moons are not all the same. They are split into three different groups.

The first group is the inner moons. These are small, dark objects that live near the rings.

The second group is the five major moons. These are large and round.

The third group is the irregular moons. These stay far away from the planet. Their paths are very tilted and odd.

Inner moons work like a busy, crowded neighborhood. Many of them live in groups called Portia or Belinda.

These moons are so close that they pull on each other. This constant pulling makes their paths unstable. Some moons might even crash into others. For example, Desdemona may hit Cressida soon. Cupid might hit Belinda in 10 million years.

These crashes could create new rings for Uranus. The inner moons are made of water ice and dark material. Some moons, like Cordelia, help keep the rings in place. They act like shepherds for the ring system.

The five major moons are much bigger and rounder. They are in hydrostatic equilibrium. This means they have enough gravity to pull themselves into a round shape.

Four of these moons show signs of activity from the inside. They have canyons or even volcanoes on their surfaces. Titania is the largest of them all. It is 1,578 km wide.

This makes it the eighth-largest moon in our solar system. It is about one-twentieth the mass of Earth's Moon. The moons are made of a mix of rock and ice.

People have been finding these moons for a long time. William Herschel found the first two, Titania and Oberon, in 1787.

Later, William Lassell found Ariel and Umbriel in 1851.

Gerard Kuiper found the last large moon, Miranda, in 1948.

Many other moons were found much later. The Voyager 2 probe found ten inner moons in 1986.

Even today, we find more. In 2025, scientists found a new inner moon using the James Webb Space Telescope.

Naming these moons is a very special tradition. Instead of using Greek myths, they use characters from stories.

Most names come from plays by William Shakespeare. Some also come from a poem by Alexander Pope.

For example, the moons Oberon and Titania come from a play called A Midsummer Night's Dream. The moon Miranda comes from the play The Tempest.

This makes the moons feel like characters from a magical tale. It is a lovely way to remember these distant worlds.
