The Twelve Olympians were the most important gods in ancient Greek religion.

These deities were part of a large family of immortal beings. People called them Olympians because they were said to live on Mount Olympus. While there were many other gods, these twelve held a special place. They were seen as the main rulers of the Greek world. Different people sometimes had different ideas about who exactly belonged to this group.

Many of these gods were related to one another in a big family. The first generation of Olympians were the children of the Titans Cronus and Rhea.

Some gods had very different origins according to different stories. For example, some said Aphrodite was the daughter of Zeus.

Others believed she was born from the sea foam.

These gods gained their power through a long and difficult history. They won a ten-year war against the previous generation of rulers. These older rulers were known as the Titans. The Titans were the children of the first beings, Gaia and Uranus. Zeus led his siblings to victory during this great struggle. This victory allowed the Olympians to become the supreme rulers. After the war, they established their home on the high mountain.

Each Olympian had a specific job and special objects.

Even the number twelve was important in many Greek places.

We can still see how these beliefs shaped the ancient world. In Athens, an altar for the twelve gods was built around 522 BC.

This altar was a central place for the city. Other places like Olympia also had traditions involving twelve gods. Some groups even used six pairs of gods on single altars. The names of these gods often changed in Roman culture. For instance, Zeus became Jupiter and Aphrodite became Venus. These old stories still help us understand how people once viewed the world.
