In Greek mythology, the Titans were a group of powerful deities. They were the gods who ruled the cosmos before the Olympians arrived. Many people think of them as the "former gods" because they belonged to an older generation. These beings provided a backstory for the Greek gods we know today. Their stories explain how the Olympians eventually came to rule the world.

The family tree of the Titans is very large and detailed. According to the poet Hesiod, they were the twelve children of Uranus and Gaia. Uranus represented the Sky, while Gaia represented the Earth. The six male Titans were Oceanus, Coeus, Crius, Hyperion, Iapetus, and Cronus. The six female Titans were Theia, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, and Tethys.

Many of these siblings married one another to form new families. For instance, Cronus married his sister Rhea to start a new line.

These marriages created many famous figures in ancient stories. Oceanus and Tethys were the parents of three thousand river gods. Hyperion and Theia were the parents of Helios the Sun and Selene the Moon. Iapetus and Clymene had children named Atlas and Prometheus. Cronus and Rhea had six children who became the first Olympians. These included Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Hades, and Hestia.

A great conflict changed the course of the heavens forever. This ten-year war was known as the Titanomachy. It was a battle between the Titans and the younger Olympians. During this time, Cronus had previously taken power from his father, Uranus. Eventually, Zeus and his siblings defeated the Titans in this struggle. The winners became the new ruling group of gods.

After the war, the lives of the Titans changed completely. Most of the defeated Titans were banished from the upper world. They were held as prisoners under guard in Tartarus. This place was located deep underground, far from the heavens. Some Titans, like Oceanus and Helios, were allowed to remain free. This separation marked the end of the old order.
