He is often called the hound of Hades. His main job was to guard the gates of the underworld. He worked to prevent the dead from leaving that place. Many people wonder about his strange appearance. Most stories describe him as a multi-headed dog.

Other accounts say he had a serpent for a tail. Some stories even say snakes grew from his body or his mane. These details make him seem very fearsome.

Cerberus came from a family of monsters. He was the offspring of Echidna and Typhon.

Some writers only name Echidna as his mother. He had several famous monster relatives. His brother was the multi-headed Lernaean Hydra. Another brother was Orthrus, a two-headed dog. He also had a relative called the Chimera. This creature had the heads of a lion, a goat, and a snake.

His most famous story involves the hero Heracles.

A king named Eurystheus gave Heracles a hard job. He ordered Heracles to bring Cerberus back from the underworld. This was the twelfth and final labour for Heracles. It was a very big task for the hero. Heracles had to capture the dog to finish his work. This event is a major part of Greek myth.

We can still see Cerberus in art today.
