Goats are very good at eating different plants. They can eat things that other animals do not want. They like plants such as briar and ragweed. They also eat ironweed and spiny amaranth. They do not like grasses like Bermuda grass or crab grass.

Because they eat these plants, they can live on poor land. This makes them great for areas with little vegetation.

Goats are also very agile animals. This means they move with great skill and ease. They can even climb trees to find food to browse.

Farmers can raise them on small areas of pasture. They can also farm goats alongside sheep and cattle. This works well on low-quality grazing land. Goats turn the plants into quality lean meat.

Many different countries are involved in goat farming. As of 2022, India is the largest producer of goat milk. In 2024, New Zealand was the top exporter of milk. The United States was the largest importer that same year.

In the US, meat goats are farmed in every state. Most of this happens in the Southeast. Texas is the main producer in the US. It makes 38% of the meat goats there.

Different types of goats serve different roles on a farm. Some goats are raised specifically for the dairy industry. In the UK, about 30,000 billy goats are slaughtered for meat each year. These male goats are often not needed for milk.
