It comes from the undercoat of goats like the pashmina goat.

This hair is famous for being incredibly soft and warm. It is also a hygroscopic fiber, which means it can absorb and release water from the air. This amazing quality helps regulate your body temperature in both heat and cold. People love using it to make cozy items like jumpers, hats, and blankets.

To make clothing, workers must first collect the hair from the goats.

In the spring, goats naturally shed their winter coats during a process called moulting. Some people use a coarse comb to pull the fiber away by hand. This method is slow but creates a much higher quality product. Other places, like Australia or Iran, often shear the entire fleece at once. Once collected, the wool must undergo de-hairing to separate the soft undercoat from the coarse guard hair. The soft part is used for clothes, while the coarse hair becomes brushes.

The history of this wool goes back thousands of years.

People in Mongolia, Nepal, and Kashmir have made things with it for a very long time. In Kashmir, there are stories about how the industry began. One tradition says a saint named Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani brought 700 craftsmen from Persia to the region. Another story says a 15th-century ruler named Zain-ul-Abidin started the industry by bringing in weavers. These traditions show how much people value the skill of making fine textiles.

Today, many different countries work hard to produce this valuable fiber.

China is the largest producer, making about 19,200 metric tons of raw cashmere in 2016. Mongolia is the second largest producer, with about 8,900 tons. Afghanistan is ranked third in production. In the United States, there are strict rules for labeling. To be called cashmere, the fiber must be the fine undercoat and have a very small diameter. This ensures that when you buy it, you are getting the real, soft thing.

Cashmere connects many parts of the world through trade and craft. In the 1800s, beautiful Kashmir shawls became a huge sensation in Europe. This helped grow the industry in places like France and Scotland. You might also see cashmere blended with other materials. For example, it can be mixed with silk to add a shiny look. It can also be mixed with sheep's wool to make it stretchier. Whether it is a simple pair of socks or a fancy coat, cashmere is a gift from nature.
