You can wear it loosely over your shoulders, your upper body, or your arms. Sometimes, people even wrap it over their heads. Most shawls are shaped like a rectangle. However, some are square, triangular, or even long and oblong. People use shawls for many different reasons. They keep you warm during chilly evenings or outdoor events. They can also be part of a special costume or a religious head covering. In some places, shawls are a very important part of traditional folk dress.

Many of the most famous shawls come from a place called Kashmir.

These textiles are often made from very soft wool called pashmina. This wool comes from the under-fleece of a wild mountain goat. The finest wool is gathered from shrubs where the animals rub against them. Another very expensive type is called shahtoosh, which comes from the Tibetan antelope. Some weavers make a special kind called Dourukha. This is a double-sided shawl that looks the same on both sides. It is a unique piece of work that combines weaving and embroidery.

Making these shawls is a very careful and slow process.

One way is called Kani kar, where weavers create designs while they work on the loom. They might weave small segments and then sew them together so perfectly you cannot see the seams. Another way is called Amlikar, which uses needlework. An expert embroiderer, known as a rafugar, works on the outlines of the patterns. They use tiny stitches to bring the designs to life. These designs often look like things from nature, such as roses, tulips, or cherry blossoms. They use deep colors like maroon, gold, and dark red.

The Emperor Akbar was a great fan of Kashmir shawls. He even started a fashion of wearing two shawls sewn back to back. By the 18th century, these fine wraps became very popular with wealthy ladies in England and France. In the late 1700s, people in Europe began making imitations. One famous pattern is called paisley. This name comes from a town in Scotland called Paisley. This is where factories made many shawls that looked like the ones from India.

This shape actually started as a design called butta-jeghgha in Persia. It represented a stylized cypress tree. Over hundreds of years, the shape changed into the curved design we see today. In India, many people thought the shape looked like a mango. Because of this, it became a very popular design in many different Indian textiles. Even though it is now found all over the world, its roots are hundreds of years old. It is a wonderful example of how art travels between different lands.
