In the world of fashion, people use different names for them. A short cape is often called a capelet. A long version is usually called a cloak. Some capes are made to be very roomy to keep a person dry in the rain. They are used for many reasons, from staying warm to showing off beautiful style.

There are many ways to wear and make a cape. Some capes are very short and only cover the shoulders. These are often made of fur or expensive fabrics like silk and satin. Long capes can be used as formal wear for ladies. They protect fine clothes from the weather without crushing them. In hair salons, a cape is used to protect a person's clothes. It keeps loose hair or styling chemicals from getting on their outfit.

Capes have a very long history. We do not know exactly when they were first used. However, we see them in early Roman military uniforms. In medieval Europe, people often wore capes with hoods. During the nineteenth century, capes became popular in fashion again. In the Aztec Empire, noblemen wore a cape called a tilmàtli. These were very colorful and elaborate. They showed that the wearer was an important person, like an emperor or a high priest.

Different groups use capes for special purposes today. Catholic clergy wear a formal cape called a ferraiolo. They also use a liturgical vestment called a cope. In some ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities, capes are a symbol of modesty. Women in the Toldot Aharon sect in Israel wear them to show spiritual devotion. Some believe these capes bring blessings like health. Even the military uses them. In France, police and military units use capes as rainwear.

You might also recognize capes from stories and movies. In American comic books, capes are a famous symbol for superheroes. Artists use them to make a hero look like they are moving fast. Some heroes like Superman wear them just for decoration. Others use them for real tasks. Batman uses his cape to glide through the air. The character Spawn has a living cape that follows his mental commands.
