A cloak is a loose garment worn over other clothes. It works like an overcoat to protect people from the weather.

Most cloaks are sleeveless, which makes them easy to put on. They usually fasten at the neck or over the shoulder. A cloak might be short at the hip or long at the ankle. Some even have a hood attached to cover the head. Some designs have slits so hands can pass through the front.

People use different kinds of cloaks for many reasons. In the West, people use opera cloaks for fashion. These are made of fine materials like wool, cashmere, velvet, or satin.

They protect fancy evening clothes from the elements. Some religious leaders, called Christian clerics, wear special cloaks. These are known as a cappa or a cope. They use these as part of their religious clothing.

History shows that many cultures have used cloaks for a long time. Ancient Greeks wore a cloak called a himation from 750 to 30 BC.

These were colorful and showed high status. In Australia, Aboriginal people wore cloaks made from possum skins or kangaroo pelts. They even used these animal skin cloaks as blankets or drums.

Even the name of the garment tells a story. The word cloak comes from an Old North French word meaning "bell." This is because the garment can have a bell-like shape. It is also related to the word clock. In stories, cloaks often have special powers. In the Harry Potter books, a cloak can make someone invisible. In The Lord of the Rings, they help people blend into their surroundings. A Marvel character named Doctor Strange even wears a magical Cloak of Levitation.

Cloaks are also very famous in movies and books. The character Dracula is often shown wearing a large cloak. This became very popular after a 1931 movie version of the play. Sometimes the word cloak is used to describe hiding things. People use the phrase "cloak and dagger" to talk about secrets or mysteries. This comes from how a cloak can hide a person or a weapon. It is a simple piece of clothing that has many meanings.
