Its main job is to protect the body and clothing from stains. It can stop liquids, dust, or even heat from touching your skin. Some people wear them to stay clean while working. Others use them to keep safe from things like acid or allergens. Aprons can also be used as a uniform or a fashion statement. They are helpful tools for many different jobs and activities.

There are several ways an apron can work.

A waist apron covers you from the waist down. A bib apron covers your chest and upper body too. This style is often called a "French chef's apron." Most bib aprons use a strap that goes around the neck. Some use shoulder straps that cross at the back instead. These shoulder straps can be more comfortable for moving around. A tabard is another kind that covers both your front and your back.

People have used aprons for a very long time.

The word comes from the Old French word "napron." This meant a small piece of cloth. In the Middle Ages, many workers wore them to protect expensive clothes. Blacksmiths, gardeners, and even jewelers used them every day. Some workers were even called "apron men" because they wore them so often. In the 1500s, aprons even became a way to show style. Women would add beautiful lace and embroidery to their aprons.

Different jobs used different colors and styles.

For example, English barbers were known as "checkered apron men." Cobblers often wore black aprons to hide dark wax. Butchers wore aprons with blue stripes to stay clean. Butlers wore green aprons while they worked. Stonemasons wore white aprons to protect against dust. Even the French Foreign Legion wore leather aprons for ceremonies. These details helped people know exactly what kind of work someone did.

Today, aprons are used in many different ways.

In the 1960s, fewer people wore them for housework. However, they are having a "renaissance" or a new period of popularity. Many people now wear them as a "retro-chic" fashion accessory. Both men and women use them for cooking and chores. They are also used in special ceremonies, like by the Freemasons. From ancient gods to modern kitchens, the apron remains a very useful tool.
