In the United Kingdom, people call it a waistcoat. In the United States and Canada, it is called a vest. People often wear it over a dress shirt and a necktie. It usually sits below a coat as part of formal wear. Many men wear it as the third piece in a three-piece suit.

Some waistcoats are very simple, while others are quite ornate. They can be used for fancy events or for leisure.

Most waistcoats have a full opening in the front. They fasten using buttons or press studs, which are also called snaps. Some styles are single-breasted, while others are double-breasted. In a three-piece suit, the waistcoat cloth matches the jacket and trousers.

Some waistcoats even have lapels, which are the folded flaps of cloth on the front. Before people wore wristwatches, gentlemen kept pocket watches in a small waistcoat pocket. They used a metal watch chain to keep the watch safe. A small bar on the chain helped catch it if it was dropped.

History shows that waistcoats have changed a lot over time. In the 17th century, they were often long and had sleeves.

King Charles II of England helped make them a major fashion in 1666. He wanted to teach the nobility about thrift, or being careful with money. Some say he wanted to move away from French styles. In the 1800s, the fit became much shorter and tighter. Some people even used them as foundation garments to help shape the body.

For very formal evening events, the rules change. A white waistcoat is worn for white tie events. A black waistcoat is used for black tie events. These evening versions are cut much lower on the chest. They might have a "U" or "V" shape at the top. They can also have pointed, flat, or rounded tips.

Today, you can see waistcoats in many different parts of life. They are not just for formal suits or kings. For example, the Girl Scouts of the USA use vests to display their badges.

In the United Kingdom, billiard players often wear them during snooker tournaments. Even members of the clergy have their own special versions. Some clergy wear a vest that buttons all the way to the neck. This style shows their clerical collar. It is interesting to see how one piece of clothing fits so many roles.
