It is often worn as an undershirt. This means it goes under other clothes. Most camisoles reach down to the waist. Some styles are cropped very short. Other types cover the whole pelvic area. They are light and easy to wear. People find them very useful for many reasons.

These tops use many different light materials. Many are made from cotton. Some use smooth fabrics like silk or satin. You might also see them made of nylon. Some use stretchy fabrics like lycra or spandex.

These stretchy fabrics became popular in the late 2000s. They help the top fit close to the body. This makes the garment feel very snug.

How a camisole is worn can change. Most have thin straps called spaghetti straps. You can wear them over a bra. Some people choose to wear them without one. Since 1989, some tops have a built-in bra. This provides support for the bust. This helps people who do not want to wear a separate bra. It is a clever way to design clothing.

History shows that the word meant different things. Long ago, it did not just mean a small top. It could refer to many kinds of jackets. Some were overshirts worn under a doublet. Others were called négligées for women. Even men wore sleeved jackets called camisoles. The meaning has changed a lot over time. Now, we use it for a specific type of sleeveless shirt.

Modern camisoles do more than just sit under clothes. Since the year 2000, people wear them as outerwear. This means they wear them as a main top. Some versions are even used for shaping the body. These garments help smooth the waist or abdomen. They use wider straps and longer hems. They use shiny, stretchy fabric to help the body shape.
