Socks are important pieces of clothing for our feet. They often cover the ankle or part of the calf.

People usually wear them under shoes or boots. One big job of a sock is absorbing perspiration, which is sweat. The feet are heavy producers of sweat in the human body. A foot can produce a lot of sweat in a single day. Socks soak up this moisture and help it evaporate into the air.

They also protect expensive shoes from sweat to help them last longer. In cold places, warm socks help people avoid getting frostbite. In summer, people wear thin socks to stay cool.

Some socks are made from cotton, wool, or nylon. Other materials like silk, bamboo, or cashmere make them feel soft. Merino wool is a popular choice because it stays warm and keeps its shape. You can find socks in almost any color or pattern.

In ancient times, people made them from leather or matted animal hair. The Greek poet Hesiod wrote about "piloi," which were socks made of animal hair. Romans wore fitted socks called "udones" around the 2nd century AD. In Egypt, researchers found socks made with a technique called naalbinding.

A knitting machine was invented in 1589 to make socks faster. Later, the introduction of nylon in 1938 changed everything. This allowed makers to blend different types of yarn together. Today, two places are very important for making socks. Fort Payne, Alabama, was known as the "sock capital of the world." At its peak around the year 2000, it employed about 7,000 workers. Now, Datang in China is a leading center.

For school or sports, many people wear knee-high socks. In football, players often use knee socks to protect their legs. Business people often wear dark dress socks, like navy or black. Some people wear low-cut socks that stay hidden inside sneakers. The word "sock" actually comes from the Old English word "socc." This meant a "light slipper." It traces back to a Latin word for a light, low-heeled shoe.
