Many people value them for staying cozy.

There are many different ways to make a slipper. Open-heel slippers cover the toes but leave the back open. Some people call these open-heel slippers in expensive hotels. Closed slippers have a guard to keep your foot from sliding out. Slipper boots look like boots and often have soft fleece inside. You can even find sandal slippers with soft rubber soles. Some people even wear novelty slippers that look like animal paws or cars.

Slippers have been around for a very long time. In China, people made them as far back as 4700 BC. These early slippers used cotton or woven rush. They sometimes had leather linings and symbols like dragons. Native Americans made decorative moccasins for indoor use. These moccasins used beadwork and showed scenes from nature. Inuit and Aleut people used smoked hare-hide to stay warm.

History shows how slippers changed over the years. In the West, records of slippers go back to 1478. The English word "slippers" appeared around that same time. During the Victorian era, ladies used slippers to show off needlepoint skills. They used beautiful embroidery to decorate their shoes. Some fancy evening slippers are called "Prince Albert" slippers. These are made of velvet and have gold initials.

Slippers are also famous in stories and movies. Cinderella is known for her glass slippers in a 1697 tale. In The Wizard of Oz, a character wears ruby slippers. Those red shoes sold for $666,000 at an auction in 2000. This made them the most expensive film shoes ever sold. In Hawaii, people call flip-flops "slippers" or "slippahs." In the American South, people often call them "house shoes."
