Dress code

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A dress code is a set of rules about what people should wear. These rules are often written down for specific groups. People use them to show many different ideas through their clothes. A dress code can show a person's social class or their cultural identity. It can also show a person's religion or their attitude toward being comfortable. Sometimes, clothing helps people understand if someone is following social rules.

Different places have very different ways of using clothing. In the Philippines, men wear a barong tagalog for formal events. Women there might wear a baro't saya. In Scotland, people often wear a kilt. In Ghana, people wear kente cloth. Bhutan even has a code called driglam namzha. This code says which traditional clothes to wear in public.

History shows how clothing has changed over many centuries. From the seventh to the ninth centuries, European royalty used clothes to show their rank. They wore fancy things like gold and silver chains. They also used jeweled belts and amber beads. Most working people wore plain tunics and cloaks. In the 1950s, casual clothes became more common in many places. By the 1980s, tech companies in Silicon Valley started a business casual style.

Religion also plays a big part in how people dress. Islam was founded in the seventh century. Some Muslim women wear a hijab, which is a headscarf. This can show their faith and modesty. In the Sikh religion, which started in the fifteenth century, some men wear a turban. This is a requirement for members of the Khalsa. In Dubai, rules say that shoulders and knees must be covered in public.

Workplaces often have their own private rules for what to wear. Lawyers and bankers often wear a suit and a tie. In the tech industry, people like Mark Zuckerberg often wear casual clothes. Some rules can be very strict, like at the Cannes Film Festival. There, men must wear tuxedos and women must wear gowns. Some schools even use a finger test to see if skirts are long enough.
