The little black dress, or LBD, is a famous type of clothing. It is a black evening or cocktail dress that is cut simply. Most LBDs are often short in length. This dress is considered essential for a complete wardrobe. It is very versatile, which means it can be used in many ways. You can wear it for business with a jacket and pumps. You can also wear it to a formal ball with ornate jewelry.

There are many ways to style this simple garment. In the 1960s, the "mod" generation liked miniskirt versions. Some designers even added cutouts or slits to the fabric. They used sheer materials like netting or tulle for a new look. In the 1980s, people used casual fabrics like knits for the dress. Some designs even had broad shoulders or peplums. Later, in the 1990s, the grunge culture wore the dress with combat boots.

History shows that the color black has changed many times. In the early 16th century, black showed great wealth. This was because making black dye from imported oak apples was very expensive. By the Victorian era, black was a color for grief and mourning. Widows were expected to wear black for at least one year. Coco Chanel helped change this idea in 1926. She published a picture of a simple black dress in American Vogue. This dress was calf-length and very straight.

Chanel's design was very important for fashion history. Vogue even called her dress "Chanel's Ford." This was a comparison to the Model T car. It meant the dress was simple and accessible to all social classes. The LBD remained popular during the Great Depression because it was elegant and economical. During World War II, it was used because of textile rationing. It also served as a common uniform for women entering the workforce. Hollywood films also helped the LBD become very popular.

Many famous people have worn the little black dress. Audrey Hepburn wore a famous black Givenchy dress in the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany's. That dress sold for £410,000 at an auction in 2006. The singer Édith Piaf often wore a black sheath dress. People called her the "little black sparrow" because of this habit. Tennis player Maria Sharapova also designed a black dress for the US Open. She used a crystal-studded collar for her 2006 match. The LBD is now part of universal fashion.
