People wear them to formal events like the opera. They might also wear them to fancy dinners or weddings. These dresses come in different lengths. Some reach the mid-calf, which is called a ballerina length. Others are called tea length or go all the way to the floor. People often wear evening gloves with these gowns. They are made from very soft and rich fabrics. You might see silk, velvet, or satin used to make them.

Making these dresses involves choosing the right shape. A ball gown is a special kind of dress. It always has a very full skirt and a tight top. An evening gown can have many different shapes instead. Some look like a mermaid or a trumpet. Others might be an A-line or a sheath shape. These dresses can have straps, sleeves, or even halters. Designers use fabrics like chiffon or organza to create these looks. The way a dress is cut changes how it moves.

History shows that these dresses started at royal courts. In the 1400s, the Burgundian court set new fashions.

Back then, most dresses were made of wool. Noble people added a long train to their clothes. They used expensive silk and furs to show they were wealthy. In the 1600s, the focus moved to France. The court of Louis XIV loved dresses with long trains. These gowns had low necklines and lots of lace. They also featured beautiful ribbons and full sleeves.

Many styles changed as the years went by. In the 1830s, dresses had very large sleeves. By the 1850s, the necklines became quite low. The 1890s brought a very narrow waist style. During the 1920s, the dresses became much simpler. This was known as the Flapper era. In the 1930s, people started using artificial fibers. Designers also used a special way of cutting called a bias cut. These changes happened because people's lives were changing too.

Today, evening gowns are still very important for celebrations. You can see them at charity balls or theater premieres. They are worn for black-tie or white-tie events. Even though styles change, some things stay the same. The full-skirted ball gown is still the most formal choice. People still love to use beautiful silk and fine embroidery. Fashion helps people show their style at big parties. It is a way to celebrate special moments together.
