A strapless dress is a special kind of clothing. It stays up on the body without any straps on the shoulders.

To keep the dress from slipping, it usually uses a tight bodice. Many dresses have a corset or a brassiere hidden inside. This internal support helps the garment stay in the right place. People often wear these dresses for very special events. They are popular choices for fancy parties and big celebrations.

How a strapless dress stays up is quite clever. The tightness of the inner part holds the dress against the body.

In the 1950s, designer Madame Grès made flowing dresses. These were held up by custom corsets made by Alice Cadolle. Later, in the 1970s, Halston made a different kind. He designed an unstructured strapless dress that was less stiff. By the 1980s, makers used stretchy, elastic fabrics. These new materials did not need stiff bones inside.

This style has a very interesting history. Some say the actress Libby Holman helped invent it in 1930.

A designer named Mainbocher made a black satin gown in 1934. This gown is often called the first strapless evening dress. Another woman named Brenda Frazier helped make the style famous. She wore a strapless dress for her debut. She even appeared on the cover of Life magazine in 1938. These women showed the world a brand new look.

Different people have had many different feelings about these dresses. In the 1940s, Rita Hayworth wore a black satin gown in a film. Her dancing showed that the dresses were secure enough to move in.

However, some people in the 1940s and 1950s thought they were immodest. Catholic campaigners in the United States even protested against them. In 1954, the United States Army tried to limit them in Germany. Some religious leaders also spoke against wearing them. They felt the style did not fit their rules for modesty.

Today, you can see strapless dresses in many places. They are a top choice for Western wedding dresses.

Designer Vera Wang is sometimes credited with this bridal style. Many people also wear them on red carpets for famous events. However, some workplaces and schools have rules against them. A 2012 survey found that 72% of Americans thought they were not right for the office. Even with these different rules, the style remains very popular.
