It is a garment worn mostly by women. It wraps around the upper part of the body. This top has no sleeves at all. It also has no straps on the shoulders. It usually fits tight over the breasts.

To keep it from falling, it uses elastic bands. These bands are at the top and bottom. This design helps the top stay in place.

The way it works is quite simple. The fabric forms a tube shape. The elastic makes the tube stretchy. This stretch helps it hug the body. It stays up without help from straps. Many people wear them as casual clothes. Some people also use them as dancewear. They can even be used as clubwear.

This makes them very useful for different activities.

The history of this top is very interesting. It started as summer wear for young girls. This happened back in the 1950s. Later, the style became very popular in the 1970s. It came back into fashion again later. People loved wearing them in the 1990s. They were also popular during the 2000s.

Each decade brought a new wave of interest.

A designer named Elie Tahari helped make them famous. He arrived in New York in 1971. He saw the tops in a local factory. This factory was run by Murray Kleid. The tops were made of gauze fabric. They had elastic because of a factory error.

Tahari bought tubes from Kleid for a while. Then, he started his own factory. He wanted to make many more for everyone. This helped meet the high demand for them.

Sometimes, these tops cause big debates in schools. In the 2010s, some schools banned them. One school in New Jersey made a rule. They said the tops were too distracting. They said this was for eighth grade boys.

In 2018, people argued against these bans. They said the rules were a form of body shaming. Now, some schools allow them again. This change came after advice from the National Organization for Women.
